The Waist Measurement

The waistline is the most common measurement you will ever be asked for. It is used in tops, skirts and trousers a like, and sets the length of the garment you are making.

As with all circumference measurements, the easiest way to find your natural waistline is by using a lightly tensioned, knotted loop of elastic. Note I say ‘lightly tensioned’ as you don’t want it to dig in.

Pop this over your head and down to your waist, the elastic should settle comfortably at the narrowest part, roughly in the middle of the body and go across the hollow of the back.

Make sure your arms are relaxed at the side of your body and get someone to measure around the piece of elastic. Or use a self-measure tape measure.
