The Hip Measurement

The hip measurement is taken at the widest part of the lower body and is important for fit when making skirts and trousers.

As with all circumference measurements, the easiest way to find your hip is by using a lightly tensioned, knotted loop of elastic. Note I say ‘lightly tensioned’ as you don’t want it to dig in.

Pop this over your head and down to the hip area, slide the elastic to the widest part of your buttocks and, keeping it parallel to the floor, bring it around level at the front. The elastic should not pull-in under the abdomen.

Make sure your feet are together and get someone to measure around the piece of elastic. Or use a self-measure tape measure.
